Week Three of Your Pregnancy

Week 3 Info

WEEK 3

Once the early embryo has reached the uterus it will then attach to a random location to the lining and begin the implantation process and development of the placenta.  You may have some very light bleeding which is often called implantation spotting.  This early placenta begins to make a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin or HCG.  HCG is the hormone that turns the urine pregnancy test positive, maybe by the end of this week.

While the placenta is developing and attaching to the wall of the uterus your baby is just a tiny ball consisting of several hundred cells.  Amniotic fluid is beginning to collect around the ball of cells and will help cushion your baby in the days to come.

While all this is happening you probably don't even know you are pregnant yet.  Your only sign at this point might be the tiny bit of implantation spotting but not everyone has this.  Other possible signs before you even get a positive pregnancy test might be breast tenderness, sudden fatigue, frequent urination and a heightened sense of smell or sensitivity to smells.

Continue to avoid alcohol and heavy caffeine use.  Many people report having had a margarita or two before discovering that they were early pregnant at the time.  Exposure like this at less than 5 weeks are very unlikely to cause any problems  since the placenta isn't well developed so don't worry if you happened to have a small drink before you knew you were pregnant.  Continue to get light to moderate exercise and take your vitamins.
