I just read an article in 'Dear Abby' or whatever her name is now, which discussed Facebook. The point of the article was focused on a mom who is frustrated with an Aunt that is a friend of her teen and is 'stalking her online.' The stalking consists of asking questions and then telling the information to Mom. Mom is bugged by this and the 'Dear Abby' lady suggests the teen use online tools to cut her aunt out of gathering this information and keep her page confidential. HELLO MOM...AND DEAR ABBY... PLEASE TUNE IN TO THE TEEN WORLD! (Ok, yeah that was supposed to be me yelling.) This is also what I did when I read the article. This is a wonderful opportunity for mom to learn about her online teen AND if the teen is adiment about keeping her aunt out --- hmmm, why would that be? Also, if the Aunt can't see the information --- who can?
I absolutely do not believe in becoming a parent-cop, but at the same time it is very important to know what others know about your teen. If your teen was willing to 'friend' a relative then it is what it is. Encourage him or her to be comfortable with their choices and if your teen isn't --- use this as a great opportunity to have an open discussion.
