Are our girls afraid of MATH!!??
Well, this new study shows little girls may learn to fear math - from the very women who are their earliest teachers.
In the study of first- and second-graders, it suggests - Female elementary school teachers who are concerned about their own math skills could be passing that along to the little girls they teach.
The study, out of the University of Chicago, looked at 52 boys and 65 girls who were in classes taught by 17 different teachers.
Since 90% of U.S. elementary school teachers are women, so were those in the study.
Student math ability was not related to teacher math anxiety at the start of the school year, but by the end of the year, the more anxious teachers were about their own math skills, the more likely their female students - (not the boys) - were to agree that "boys are good at math and girls are good at reading."
So now, math requirements for elementary educators is being 'rethought'.
**The researchers report is published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
