Should your son join Cub Scouts?

Cub Scouts is open to boys in first through fifth grades. But before you sign up your son, you should understand that Cub Scouts is really a family activity. If you’re looking for dump-n-drive activity (i.e. you drop off your son and drive off), Cub Scouts isn’t for you or your son.
First, there’s a time commitment. All boys and their parents get together once a month for a pack meeting. Then boys meet two to four times a month (depending on the pack) in smaller groups called dens. Dens are arranged by age. There are also various optional activities throughout the year, including community service projects, snow play days, bowling and swim parties, den and family campouts, and scout nights at professional sporting events.
Throughout the year, the boys complete requirements to earn their badges and other awards. The boys love all the badges, belt loops, pins, and segments! Most of these requirements are done at den meetings. But some are completed at home with parent help.
Secondly, parents are – and should be – involved. The packs are run by parent volunteers; dens are run by parent leaders. Parents typically take turns volunteering at meetings.
Both my sons are Cub Scouts, so I obviously think the time and effort is worth it. I think the programming is rich and really geared to what boys enjoy – pinewood derby races, games, field trips, camping. The boys learn skills and are recognized for their efforts. And they understand the value of community service. We participate in Scouting, while also participating in sports and music lessons.
As a mom, I have seen boys struggle to develop meaningful friendships. Scouting gives boys the opportunity to grow together and build on those friendships over time.
Finally, I think Scouting strengthens the bonds between sons and parents. Through Scouting, sons and parents spend quality time together - working and playing.
