Children less healthy if you work?

Are you a working mom?
Could you stand to hear your children might not be as healthy, because you work?

First, we should mention, this new study, published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health September 30th, 2009, doesn't take into account dads... so remember that as you consider it's findings.
Also, we probably all have friends who would prove this story as wrong, as it is right... this is what it says.

Researchers with Britain's Institute for Child Health point out about 60 percent of women in the US and UK are now working.
It studied more than 12,000 five year olds.
They found, those with working moms are less active, and more likely to eat unhealthy food.
They suggest time constraints might be one reason for the results... (you think!?)
The study says, with both parents working, there is less time to provide their children with healthy foods and opportunities for physical activity.

Okay, fair enough, but it also says working parents with flexible schedules, have children with the same 'unhealthy' life-style.
We would argue, don't those 'flexible schedule's' allow us to take our children to their sporting activities and pack healthy lunches, make a smart breakfast and a decent dinner?
If yours doesn't, maybe this is a good reality check.

Mom's, it says if we work, we offer the kids fewer fruits and vegi's and they drink more sugary drinks between meals.
It points out, we're more likely to drive our kids to school, instead of walking them, or riding bikes.

Still, whether we agree with the findings or not, we can never be reminded enough to make sure our little ones are eating healthy, setting good examples and getting lots of good play and exercise time in.

What do you think?
